Queen’s Baton 2010 Delhi to visit its penultimate international destination, Bangladesh

DHAKA, 20 June 2010: The Queen’s Baton 2010 Delhi, on its way to India, will reach its penultimate international destination Bangladesh on 20 June 2010. Next day, the baton will attend Cultural Show followed by dinner with attendees including Ministers, Members of Parliament and other dignitaries.


On 22 June 2010, there will be a ceremonious opening with welcome address by the President followed by the commencement of relay. Relay will commence at Army stadium through to National Parliamentary House (Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban ), located at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, has distinctive architectural features. Designed by the famous architect Louis I. Kahn, it may be called an architectural wonder of this region – a National Monument of Bangladesh.


Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh. Located on the banks of the Buriganga River, Dhaka, along with its metropolitan area, has a population of around 13 million, making it the largest city in Bangladesh. It is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. Dhaka is also known as the Rickshaw Capital of the World. Approximately 400,000 cycle rickshaws run each day. Today it serves as one of the prime centres for culture, education and business in the region.


Bangladesh first participated in 1978 Commonwealth Games held in Edmonton, Canada. Bangladesh is participating regularly in all Commonwealth Games since 1990 Auckland Games.
