Volunteers in Delhi will be the best, says Kalmadi

NEW DELHI: Volunteers of the recently concluded Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) General Assembly were today felicitated for their hard work through the Rewards and Recognition Programme at a function held at the Headquarters of the Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi.

Addressing the volunteers at the function, Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, MP, and Chairman of the Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi (OC CWG Delhi 2010) said, “We should be clapping for you. You did a great job and passed the test with flying colours. All CGAs said that you were great volunteers. This is the first step, lot more steps are to be taken but I am sure you can do it. I have seen Manchester, Sydney and Melbourne Games but what I have seen in Volunteers in Delhi assures me that you will be the best. Keep it up”.

Different Functional Areas of the Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi identified outstanding volunteer performers, who were recognised for their efforts. Apart from these volunteers, a special acknowledgement was given to volunteers Himanshu Goel, Gautam Khosla and Mandeep Sahota for their willingness to lend a helping hand at all times.

Delegates of the CGF General Assembly, including CGF President Michael Fennell, had appreciated the Volunteer Programme. In his address to the media at the end of the General Assembly, Mr Fennell had said, “The volunteer numbers would be growing from hundreds to thousands by next year. The volunteers involved in the General Assembly were appropriately trained, were working from their heart and were found to be sincere.”

The Rewards and Recognition Programme is aimed at encouraging the volunteers to give their best and appreciating their efforts.

Prior to the CGF General Assembly, the volunteers were given general training including first aid and role specific training. Volunteers also participated in recreational and team building activities.

A total of 166 volunteers were engaged during the CGF General Assembly in different shifts to support the activities undertaken by 11 Functional Areas of the OC CWG Delhi 2010. The Ministry of Tourism facilitated the sourcing of volunteers from premier institutes such as IHM, DIHM, ITDC, IITM, Delhi College of Engineering, Lady Shriram College for Women and SGTB Khalsa College.

For volunteers, the CGF General Assembly was the first opportunity to be associated with the Games. The CGF Assembly has given the volunteers a chance to enhance their expertise for Delhi 2010.

Dipti Kotra of SGTB Khalsa College, who worked with the CGA Relations Functional Area said, “Working as part of the Organising Committee was a tremendous experience. It added to my overall personality as well and has motivated me in a lot of ways. I would thank the OC for involving me in such a wonderful international event.”

Suyash Mathur who worked with as a Liason Officer for Scotland with the CGA Relations Functional Area said, “the CGF General Assembly was just a stepping stone for the big Games event lined up next year. I hope the Games go as well as this assembly and wish the volunteers create a huge impact with our combined efforts. Thanks to the whole team. Cheers!”
