Volunteers will be real face of Games: Kalmadi

NEW DELHI, September 26, 2009: Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi Chairman Suresh Kalmadi has said the army of selfless and dedicated volunteers will be the real face of the Games next year. “In fact they will be the backbone of the Games,” he said.

“You can make the nation proud by showcasing our hospitality and ethos to the visitors,” he told the first lot of volunteers who he welcomed to the Games family at the OC headquarters on Friday. “The volunteer programme has been aimed to encourage every citizen, regardless of age, creed and occupation to participate in making the Games the best ever.”

The 222 volunteers have been selected to work during the Commonwealth Games Federation General Assembly here next month and will complement the efforts of the members of the 34 functional areas in the Organising Committee. “This occasion is only a preview to the magic of the Games next year,” he said.

“The volunteers – and we will have thousands of them during Games time – will also develop their personality, enhance knowledge and gain confidence when interacting with visitors from around the world,” he said before interacting with the volunteers along with the Volunteers Committee Chairman Jagdish Tytler.
