The strategic intention of hosting a sustainable and environment conscious mega-sporting event is pursued by a symbiotic effort of all stakeholders. Therefore, Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi (OC CWG Delhi 2010) is working hand in hand with many government organisations including - Department of Environment, Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi; Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India(GoI); Ministry of Earth Sciences, GoI, to incorporate sustainability initiatives in the planning and implementation of the Games.
The OC CWG Delhi 2010 has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for support and advice on their Green Games Programme. UNEP will also carry out independent assessment, along with reporting, using internationally acknowledged yardsticks on the sustainability elements of the Games.
The OC CWG Delhi 2010 is also receiving support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), Government of India, in the form of a “Low Carbon Campaign”, which focuses on increasing the awareness of citizens, athletes, visitors and others, towards more eco-friendly lifestyles and practices. These activities are aimed at making Delhi 2010 true Green Games and also establishing guidelines for making future sporting events green.
