This strategic intention has been initiated for supporting environmental activities by UNEP related to planning and staging of the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi. UNEP has agreed to provide necessary technical support for the Games.

Some of the key details of this MoU have been highlighted below:

Critical components of MoU with UNEP

 

  • UNEP and the Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi have agreed to work together to incorporate environmental considerations into the planning and staging of the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi.
  • UNEP will provide technical advice and information for the development and implementation of the comprehensive greening programme. This will include waste management, energy efficiency, water management, eco friendly transport, green procurement, green tourism, ozone friendly initiatives and carbon mitigation and offset.
  • UNEP will visit the venues and participate in an environmental assessment, and will provide expert advice and support for the development of its environmental and sustainability reports prior to and after the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi.
  • UNEP and the Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi will organise joint media events to promote awareness about the environmental aspects of the games.
  • UNEP and the Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 20I0Delhi will run workshops to promote the greening programme and seek support from the official partners, licensees and contractors of the Games
  • UNEP will create a mechanism for the transfer of knowledge from the Games to organisers of other major sport events, particularly the Commonwealth Games
  • UNEP will provide advice on the carbon mitigation and offset programme for the Games
  • UNEP will link the greening programme of the Games to other international campaigns and initiatives such as the Billion Tree Campaign and the Clean up the World programme.
